Shadow work can be a profound way to get to know the hidden parts of ourselves. Here are some prompts to start that exploration:

1. Reflect on Triggers
• What situations or people often trigger strong reactions in me? What emotions come up, and what might they reveal about parts of myself I try to ignore or suppress?
2. Exploring Envy and Judgment
• When I feel envious or judgmental of others, what traits am I reacting to? Could these traits reflect aspects of myself I’m denying or disowning?
3. Identifying Patterns
• Are there recurring patterns in my relationships or career that cause frustration or hurt? What beliefs or shadow parts might be contributing to these patterns?
4. Uncovering Repressed Desires
• What desires or impulses do I have that I tend to dismiss as “unacceptable” or “wrong”? How might honoring or understanding these urges bring insight into my true needs?
5. Acknowledging the “Dark” Self
• How do I define the “bad” or “unacceptable” parts of myself? How might these parts actually hold strengths, insights, or truths that I could integrate in a balanced way?
6. Owning My Story
• Are there parts of my life story or personality that I struggle to accept? What fears or insecurities might be attached to these aspects, and how would my life change if I embraced them?
7. Self-Compassion for the Shadow
• In what ways can I offer compassion and understanding to the parts of myself I tend to reject? How can I view my shadow as a friend or teacher rather than an enemy?
8. Exploring Past Shame and Guilt
• Are there moments from my past where I felt ashamed or guilty that still linger with me? What lessons or self-awareness can I extract from these experiences, and how might they relate to my shadow?
9. The Masks I Wear
• What roles or personas do I adopt in different situations (e.g., “the responsible one,” “the rebel,” etc.)? How might these roles serve as masks, hiding certain aspects of myself from others and myself?
10. Dream Reflection
• Have I had any recent dreams that brought up strong emotions or unusual imagery? What messages or hidden aspects of myself might these dreams be trying to reveal?
Take your time with these prompts, allowing yourself to go as deep as you feel comfortable. Shadow work often unfolds in layers, so revisiting certain prompts over time can also provide new insights.
