Four Questions to Live By: A Guide to Curiosity, Courage, and Alignment

Writer: Brooke SmallBrooke Small

In a world that constantly asks us to move faster, do more, and prove ourselves, slowing down to listen to our inner wisdom can feel radical. But when we take a moment to pause and ask the right questions, we can access a deeper knowing—a place where clarity, courage, and alignment reside.

Lately, I’ve been leaning into four simple yet powerful questions:

  • Is it good?

  • Is it available?

  • Is it wise?

  • Do I want it?

These questions have been showing up in my own life and in the conversations I’ve been having on The Heart of Life podcast. They are an invitation to move beyond automatic responses and step into intentional, aligned living.

Is it good?

This question invites us to assess the true nature of what we’re considering. Is it inherently good—not just for others, but for me? Will it nourish my body, mind, and spirit? Often, we are conditioned to prioritize external definitions of "good" over our own inner knowing. But this question reminds us that goodness isn’t just about obligation—it’s about alignment with our values, desires, and well-being.

Is it available?

Sometimes, the timing isn’t right, or the resources simply aren’t there. This question reminds us to take stock of reality. Is this opportunity or relationship actually available to me right now? Can I fully step into it without forcing or grasping? Recognizing what is truly available allows us to release unnecessary struggle and trust in divine timing.

Is it wise?

Here’s where discernment comes in. Just because something is good and available doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right choice. Wisdom considers the long-term impact, the energy required, and whether it aligns with our deepest values. Wisdom is not fear—it’s the deep knowing that honors both desire and discernment.

Do I want it?

Perhaps the most revealing question of all. So often, we say yes to things because we should, because it’s expected, or because we don’t want to disappoint. But do I actually want this? Does this feel expansive, life-giving, and true for me? Honoring our desires, free from obligation, is an act of self-trust and self-respect.

Bringing It All Together

These four questions act as a compass, guiding us toward choices that are in integrity with who we are and what we truly need. When we take the time to sit with them, we move from reaction to intention—from people-pleasing to self-trust.

I invite you to bring these questions into your own life.

The next time you’re faced with a decision, big or small, pause. Breathe. And ask yourself: Is it good? Is it available? Is it wise? And do I want it?

Let me know what comes up for you. And if this resonates, I’d love for you to tune into our latest podcast episodes where we explore courage, curiosity, and living in alignment.
